The writers we read this week actually have very different thoughts, despite the fact that Equiano’s work is also significant as a voice of the minority, here I will discuss the prominent difference between Wheatley and Apess.

Apess and Wheatley are both the minority in the society; however, they seem to focus on fairly different aspects in their works. Apess’s work, An Indian’s Looking-Glass For The White Man starts with a series of statements that God creates people by the image in its mind equally; thus, it is not the right of us to judge and decide who is better than the others. On the other hand, Wheatley expresses her gratitude to God for being brought to America and sees this as a way to redeem from where she came from. It feels like Apess senses a line between himself and the white man, but Wheatley feels accepted. It makes me wonder if Wheatley really feels this way, or it’s because of her religion, or the purpose of her writings?

Notes on the week’s discussion of the term “civilization” 

Both authors connect the idea of civilization with the issue of race, but in rather different ways. Apess expresses with a sarcastic and serious tone to the white men, that they are not on the same level, they are living different kinds of lives. The way Apess addresses “the civilized” is to develop the idea that those who are not white are being discriminated against and wrongfully put. On Wheatley, in her letter to George Washington, addresses her purpose in the position as an American citizen, and mentions she was writing the letter by “taken the freedom.” Different from Apess, Wheatley has her patriotic spirit for America, her words are not separating but uniting. “Civilized” may be used as rhetoric, a sarcastic tool of language for Apess as he tries to express his views, but Wheatley appears to use civilization as a universal appeal and a relatable issue (America especially), to develop her views on human rights and freedom.

Jefferson’s declaration has a clear logical flow of narration and uses universal appeal as a start. When he claims that “all men are created equal,” it clearly states one view that we cannot deny, which is that we are free to speak of our minds. Secondly, he starts to use facts to prove his points, such as pointing out the wrongful acts of King George to support his ultimate point: America should be leaving Great Britain.

The first thought that occurred to me is that Jefferson is good at persuading. He not only starts with an appeal on human welfare, he also mentions human rights on “ he was waged cruel war against human nature itself…”(in p.358 last paragraph.) The objective of his writing is quite clear, that he makes peoplethink they need to take action and fight the situation where Britain is still holding regime over America. His words are persuasive, yet rational, and by using the same pattern when he is accusing England it is easy for people to understand his point. 

Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton

In the musical, Hamilton, Jefferson may seem to be the antagonist; however, in lots of similar details, we can still see that he has the ideal and he is constantly working for a better nation. His ideal is also seen in the readings, that people are granted the right, and they have the responsibility to stand up for themselves to the reality. Just like the way he stands up for France in “Cabinet Battle #2,” what he considers is not the money or the winning or losing but the justice to be free.

In Benjamin Franklin’s work, it’s pretty surprising for me that what he values in life and wealth is kind of similar to Chinese’s thoughts. Just as Franklin says, it is best for one to be thrifty, and work hard and diligently.

In “The Way to Wealth,” he expresses that in order to be rich, we should not only work hard but also save useless spending. In addition to the life advice on wealth, it’s not difficult to realize that Franklin values diligence and frugality to be the secret to a good life of a person. Even in his biography, when he talks about his learning methods, diligence really plays an important role in his stories. (And that really reminds me of how I grew up with all these similar life mottos to follow.) 

Franklin’s Life Philosophy

Aside from Franklin claiming that he is being flawed so he could step back that the others will be happier, Franklin’s life maintains a successful balance for these four points: Self-betterment, self-examination, recognizing limits, and accepting imperfection.

Franklin’s attitude toward life is clear, he sets goals for himself and he works hard for achieving them. However, despite the fact that, as Franklin writes, he could not reach the perfect state, he was happy that, through self-examination and constant betterment, he had become a better person than the person he was before. Benjamin Franklin was still able to acquire the virtues from his accomplishments while reflecting humility by succumbing to his limits. I feel like that is also a good lesson for me, that before complaining or giving in to the challenges, we should all try our best and try to get the best selves out of our owns.

Knowing little about American History, I feel like everything I read about the “New World” is novel, surprising and fascinating. From the history of the country, the beginning of the nation to the hardship of the pioneers, these stories are actually beyond my knowledge and imagination. 

Iroquois Creation Story

Starting from the Iroquois Creation story, the story, or a legend, of America’s first forming stage. It’s interesting that we are having an indigenous story from the natives. I think these kind of stories can almost serve as first-hand information, to tell us about people’s perception and view of the world. It is how people tell their stories to their descendants and it is the way they passes down their beliefs. Like how I figure out Iroquois people have strong belief in nature, and we can see the story uses a lot of elements of the nature for its character. We can also see the concept of good and bad has already formed in the people’s mind. To me, I feel like the people made up this story have strong respect for the nature, meanwhile, they understood the danger and unpredictable trait of nature’s creation.

Columbus’ Letters

After reading Columbus’s letters, the first impression I have is that, the “self-imagined” supremacy of colonists have may already be somewhere in their culture or in their blood.  Though for most part, Columbus uses a plain narrative to describe what he observed on the islands; however, the way Columbus naming everything he see, saying the natives have no weapon, gives me a sense that he is still having a little bit of superiority in mind. On the other hand, I was shocked by how he was unhappy about the destruction he mentioned in the second letter. Being an explorer, his job is to find a new land, but this sense of preservation on what they have is very interesting for us to see.

a. 技術日新月異，新產品、新技術不斷湧現

本文將分析在Woody Allen的喜劇電影：非強力春藥，運用到哪些希臘神話中的巧妙典故，而這些典故又如何強化、增益整部戲的喜劇架構。首先討論喜劇，亞里斯多德(Aristotle)所定義的喜劇，是關於比正常人拙劣、低一等的人們的故事。人說悲劇是仰望神的偉大，喜劇則是俯瞰人的渺小。基本上，在觀賞一部喜劇時，觀眾會以接近全知的觀點認知主角的故事。

古希臘歌隊(chorus)在戲劇中扮演的角色是智慧、全知的，但是在非強力春藥中，歌隊除了說明故事現況，也試著說服Lenny做出不一樣的選擇來引導出不同的結果，甚至會指出Lenny自身意識不及的盲點。而有趣的是，我們也能看見Lenny直接與歌隊進行交談、爭論自己的選擇，儘管最後的結論都是Lenny不顧一切去尋找Linda。

一昧想要尋找Max的生母這件事，不僅僅是受好奇心驅使，更是一種執著(obsession)，而歌隊亦歌頌這種執著不僅是最危險的、也是最愚蠢的。片頭以伊底帕斯王(Oedipus)的故事作為開場，似乎即像是一種預示，將重現Oedipus故事中弒父娶母那樣，因為無法改變的傲慢(hubris)引領的執著及終將引領的命運。不過看似悲劇性的開頭，終究是以中立的喜劇結尾作結。

關於Linda，我們除了能從女主角的外表、個性及職業中發現她誘人與使人著迷之處，其實本片原文片名中也帶有暗示。原文片名，Mighty Aphrodite，直接翻譯即是強力的阿芙蘿黛蒂女神(Aphrodite)，也就是在希臘神話中代表愛情、美麗、與性的女神。我相信本片片名想將Linda以及Aphrodite的意象做連結，將Linda塑造為一充滿愛的能量與吸引力的象徵，而這也說明為什麼Lenny如此無法自拔的想尋找、幫助Linda的其中一個原始動力。

呼應開頭提及的，我們總會知道比角色們多一點事情，喜劇因此更上一層。就如最後一幕Lenny和Linda再相遇時，彼此都不知道對方照顧著自己的小孩，只有觀眾們能從「俯視」的角度看見主角被執著與無知蒙蔽的歡喜結局。

• Why should not Adam take the blame for the Fall for human beings?

Adam is the creation of a strong, intelligent male. Adam should not take the blame because he first suppressed the urge to eat the fruit. He did remain rational and obey God's instruction at the beginning not until Eve had eaten the fruit, which comes to the second reason. Adam's love for Eve is more than anything, which stems not only from his own feelings but also from what God and angels told him to. Adam let Eve work alone because of love. Moreover, Adam knows that Eve is created to be his partner and mate. That is why Adam also ate the fruit. Firstly, because he loved Eve so much that he couldn't bear leaving Eve Fall, and secondly, he could not stand being left in paradise alone. In my opinion, Adam should not be blamed for sacrificing himself for his only companion. Last but not least, if Adam only knew Eve was too naive and might make a poor judgment, he would not let her go work alone. However, Adam was not aware of the crisis which might lead to, when he accepted to let Eve separate from himself.
